Involve China in Spratlys discussion, US envoy says

DAVAO, Philippines – U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas Jr. has urged Philippine government officials to raise the Spratlys issue at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) forum.

Thomas also said China officials should be invited to avoid conflict.

“We believe all sides should sit down at the negotiating table and follow the 2002 Declaration of Conduct between ASEAN and China. Bring the issue to the ASEAN Regional Forum next week. Try to bring China in," he said.

In a radio interview, Thomas reiterated the good relationship between the U.S. and Philippines.

"We remain an ally to the Philippines,” he said. -- Report from Francis Magbanua, ABS-CBN Davao
