Customs seize 8,900 sacks of smuggled rice

MANILA, Philippines – The Bureau of Customs (BoC) seized 8,900 sacks of smuggled rice worth P21 million in Davao City.

Deputy Customs Commissioner for Intelligence Danilo Lim said the sacks of rice, found in 17 container vans in Sasa Wharf, were declared by consignees Jexand Trading and RMG 99 Trading as fertilizers.

The Customs, however, found the consignees were fictitious.

Officials said 13 of the vans contained Taiwanese rice, while the rest contained glutinous rice (malagkit).

The Customs have yet to identify the owners of the seized items, which will be auctioned off by the government. – Report from Francis Magbanua, ABS-CBN News Southern Mindanao
