Land mine blast kills 3 soldiers in Davao

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – Three government soldiers were killed in a land mine explosion in Davao City Tuesday morning.

Lt. Col. Lyndon Paniza, spokesman of the Army's 10th Infantry Division, said 3 soldiers from the 69th Infantry Battalion died after a land mine exploded some 300 to 400 meters from a military detachment in Sitio Guinobatan, Paquibato district at around 8:30 a.m.

The victims were identified as Pfc. Jeamar Doroteo, Private Isalde Melon and Private Sherwin Madrid.

The military suspects the explosive was planted by members of the New People’s Army (NPA).

According to Major Jake Obligado, battalion commander of the community military operations of the 10th Infantry Division, using land mines is a violation of the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and the International Law. -- Reports from Francis Magbanua and Bonna Pamplona, ABS-CBN News Southern Mindanao
