13 killed in Sarangani road mishap

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – Thirteen people were killed in a road accident along a highway in Malongon, Sarangani province past 5 a.m. on Thursday.

Authorities said a Mitsubishi L300 van crashed into a parked truck in Sitio Bankerohan, Barangay Banate in Malongon, killing most of the van’s passengers.

The victims were members of the Victory Chapel Fellowship Center, authorities said.

They were identified as Pastor Renante Ilugsong, Annie Ilugsong, Pastor Arnold Gabrido, Liza Gabrido, Pastor Rodolfo Asejo, Fe Asejo, Pastor Ricky Magallanes, Gigi Magallanes, Genibeth Martinez, Harvey Martinez, Pastor Gilbert Constantino, Liza Constantino and Babab Constantino.

Five others who survived the crash were rushed to the Southern Philippines Medical Center in Davao City to receive medical treatment.

“Supposed to be this is a big celebration na gusto namin ibigay sa kanila. Instead of joy, there is mourning. Hindi natin alam ang dahilan pero we have to move on,” said Pastor Francisco Buenaventura, head pastor of the Victory Chapel Fellowship Center.

The victim’s families blamed the parked truck for not having a proper early warning device.
